Capsule by Jose Guadalupe Guadiana, 1987, 34.5” x 36.75”
Guadiana was born in Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo León, Mexico, and studied at La Esmeralda, the well-known art school in Mexico City. He assisted Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros on mural commissions and Federico Cantú on large-scale bas-relief public sculpture. He moved to San Antonio in 1966, where his stone bas-relief mural Students still stands on the north face of UTSA’s Downtown Frio Street Building. His work is in the collections of the McNay Art Museum and the UTSA Art Collection.
Over time he moved from the grand scale of mural work toward a more individual and intimate style. The paintings in this show are built from saturated color, bold dark outlines, and layered, visible brushwork. Everyday scenes of people at rest and at play share the canvas with dreamlike elements, a mix of the familiar and the fantastical that runs through his work. Guadiana was also known to San Antonio artists as part of La Palomilla, a local group of Hispanic artists in San Antonio whose members included Jesse Almazán, Jesús Cantú, José Esquivel, Alberto Mijangos, and Armando Sánchez.
